Industry Leaders On Qualities To Be Successful In Business

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 30 (Bernama) -- Leadership, vision and inspiring others are important characteristics to be successful in business today, according to industry leaders.

These views was shared by panellists at the Ninth Forbes Global CEO Conference here today during a session on "Leadership: Back from the Brink" which touched on the importance of leadership in businesses.

The session was moderated by Tim Ferguson, executive editor of Forbes and editor of Forbes Asia magazine.

In order to become a successful organisation, Cathay Charity Foundation's chairman Dr Fredrick Chien said it was important to find the right partners or people.

"But no one is perfect. So we have to employ people according to their capabilities. If they are reliable, stick to them. As a leader I am here to serve and help resolve your difficulties," Chien said when asked how to find the right people for an organisation.

YTL Corp Bhd's managing director Tan Sri Francis Yeoh said one needed to master the language of integrity and morality, language of man and language of machine in order to be the right leader.

Yeoh said the language of man as well as integrity and morality was to be a good leader while language of machine was to master the usage of tools and information technology (IT) solutions.

"You must have mastered all the three languages if you want to be a member of YTL Corp," he said.

Yeoh said the language of man as well as integrity and morality was to be a good leader while language of machine was to master the usage of tools and information technology (IT) solutions.

Dr Helmut Panke, former chairman of BMW AG board of management and director of Microsoft, said as a good leader, one needed to work, and be willing to talk and listen to people.

"To be successful in a foreign country, we have to listen and experience what is specific to local people," Panke said.

"For instance, BMW was in Beijing for nine years before we got approval to start manufacturing in China. We set up an office in Beijing to learn about the Chinese," he said.
